Ahoy from P-Town! Had a fantastic sail over from Boothbay. We covered a total of 126nm in 24 hours and 26 minutes. As we followed fishing boats and dolphins out of Boothbay Harbor at first light we enjoyed breathtaking views of Maine’s coastline as the sun poked out from behind the pine trees. We continued on our almost straight shot passage to P-Town bringing us about 30nm offshore.
Not too long into the trip a little bird found us and landed on the life ring and hung out for a bit. Come dusk another bird, this time a large, chubby seagull, had landed on the bow and struggled to find a good grip in the rolly seas before finally giving up and flying off. The sun slowly gave way to an incredible moonless but starry night. I spotted a good sized fireball in the sky just before the end of one of my watches.
We ended up logging our max boat speed of 8.7 knots during the night when a large wave caught us off the starboard aft quarter and lurched the boat over, throwing plates out of the cabinets and the tea kettle off of the gimbled stove. We arrived in P-Town in good spirits around 0600 after a long sail fighting current around Race Point, launched the dinghy, and soon after Liz’s Cafe had three hungry and sleepy sailors at their door.
We’re thinking if the forecast for rain on Monday holds out we will head to Scituate tomorrow then make the quick jump from there to Boston on Monday. If Monday looks good we will just stay in P-Town tomorrow and head home from here Monday morning!
Cheers to Captain Kyle for managing a safe passage and to Paul for being a superb crew member!
